Piya Ghose, Ph.D

Principal Investigator
About Piya:
Dr. Ghose is a developmental geneticist interested in the programmed cell death of morphologically complex cells such as neurons. Dr. Ghose started as an Assistant Professor and CPRIT Scholar in Cancer Research in the Biology Department at the University of Texas at Arlington in Spring 2020.
Education and training:
B.Sc. University of Calcutta
Ph.D, Rutgers University (Neuroscience)
Postdoctoral Fellow: The Rockefeller University (Developmental Genetics)
Ginger Clark

Laboratory Manager
About Ginger:
Ginger holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Health Sciences. Ginger’s research background is in agriculture, which includes 7 1/2 years assisting mycology research at the Noble Research Institute and two years assisting quality control at AgBiTech. In the Ghose lab, Ginger is the lab manager but also helps out with everyone’s research as needed. Ginger was born and raised in Oklahoma until she relocated to the DFW metroplex in 2017. Ginger loves spending time with her family, along with crafting, sewing, cooking, playing the flute, and twirling her flag.
Karen Juanez

Laboratory Technician/Post-baccalaureate
About Karen:
Karen graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of Texas at Arlington. In the Ghose lab, she is working as a lab technician studying Compartmentalized Cell Elimination across different cell types. Born and raised in Texas, she enjoys spending time with her family and two pet dogs. In her free time, she likes working on quilting/sewing projects, painting, and watching movies.
Rashna Sharmin

Ph.D. Student
About Rashna:
Rashna joined as a Ph.D. student in Quantitative Biology in the Spring of 2021. She earned her B.Sc (honors) and M.Sc degree in Zoology from the University of Dhaka, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Her research interest includes the characterization of the role of a novel motility protein in Compartmentalized Cell Elimination. She strongly believes that the opportunity to pursue a PhD under Dr. Ghose’s supervision will promote her becoming a successful researcher. In addition to research, she is very passionate about traveling and reading books in her spare time.
Aladin Elkhalil

Ph.D. Student
About Aladin:
Aladin graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the University of Texas at Arlington in Spring 2021. He is currently a Ph.D. student in the Ghose Lab studying mechanisms of cell clearance under stress. Outside the lab, he enjoys bowling, baking, and hanging out with his nieces.
Mahshid Kalantar

Ph.D. Student
About Mahshid:
Mahshid was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Following graduation, she worked for two years as a medical laboratory technologist at a public hospital in Tehran. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in the Ghose Lab, where her research focuses on the role and regulation of local membrane dynamics in compartmentalized cell elimination. Outside the lab, she enjoys traveling, outdoor adventures, working out at the gym, and playing pickleball.
